October 28th – December 10th 2018 or
February 11th – March 24th 2019
Sura Medura is located in Hikkaduwa, South West Sri Lanka. Established in 2012, the UZ Arts managed Sura Medura Residency Programme supports artists from all disciplines in the creation of work that is enhanced by being made in Sri Lanka. UZ Arts have been organising international residencies and arts programmes in Sri Lanka since 2005.
This opportunity is open to Scotland based artists or artists whose work will benefit the people of Scotland, working in any discipline.
The residency offers mid-career artists (established through several years of practice) the chance to produce and present a new piece of work which responds to the environment of Sura Medura and Sri Lanka. Over the years, the residency has seen an evolving exploration of publicly engaged practice. As a consequence we encourage applications from artists working in this field, though artists will not be selected exclusively on this basis. Artists are encouraged to present their artistic practice at the beginning of their stay through our partnership with Colombo University of Visual and Performing Arts and to engage with the artistic community in Sri Lanka. At the end of their stay there will be the opportunity for artists to present the outcome of their residency, e.g. through exhibition, screening or performance. UZ Arts will also seek to present the outcomes of residencies in Scotland in 2019.
The residency programme will cover travel, food and accommodation costs for artists and includes a fee of £2000 to cover all materials and production costs for work produced. We do accept applications from professional couples who are also partners, however, it is on the basis that they share a room, share the fee and pay for the additional flight (approx £600) and food (approx £400) out of the fee.
To apply please send:
- CV including online links as appropriate
- A maximum of 5 images or a 5 minute video/audio of your work
- A short proposal (max. 250 words) for the residency
Please indicate which residency period you are applying for; you can state both.
Applications should be sent to email@example.com
The deadline for receiving applications is 29th June.
Short listed applicants will be called to interview the week of the 16th July. They will be informed whether they have been successful by the 20th July.
The residency opportunity is supported by Creative Scotland.
